Lexington OB GYN Associates is accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. We have been an accredited facility since 2001. Ultrasounds are a very important diagnostic tool in the area of obstetrics and gynecology.
Gynecological scans are typically obtained transvaginally unless our patient has not been sexually active or had a pelvic exam. In this case, our patients are asked to drink 24 ounces of fluid 30 minutes before their appointment.
Obstetric scans are obtained transvaginally on all patients until approximately 12-14 weeks. After that time most ultrasounds will be done abdominally with transvaginal scanning used if needed for viewing the cervix.
Our ultrasound rooms are dark and scans typically take 20 to 30 minutes. If family members are planning to attend your ultrasound, we limit the number to two. Children attending the ultrasound should be eight years old or older, unless an adult is able to chaperone the child and leave the room if the child is not co-operative.
All questions related to your ultrasound should be held until you see your physician immediately afterwards. Questions and interruptions for the sonographer can interfere with concentration throughout this important diagnostic scanning.
